On The News Agents yesterday with Jon Sopel and emily m talking about HMP Hindley where more than 50% of random drug tests on prisoners were positive. Drugs=Debt=Violence
The challenge is not just reduce supply, but to reduce demand for drugs with meaningful, purposeful activity.

Yesterday we published a report which found vulnerable girls restrained and stripped by teams of adult men.

We are absolutely clear staff were acting to save the girl's life or prevent serious harm, and they should never have been put in a position where this was necessary.

Our report out on Wetherby YOI today - a girl was stripped on two occasions by male officers to prevent her from self-harming - despite this being an entirely predictably pattern of behaviour.

Just spent the day at Parc Young Offenders Institute in Bridgend. It was, as expected, really excellent.
Heaps in common with the best schools and other organisations in that there was a really aligned staff culture and consistently high expectations. Some other reflections…🧵

Report out today on HMP Bedford - 'On E wing, the smell of mould in one cell was overpowering, with the walls damp to the touch, while the underground segregation unit was a disgrace. Here, problems with the drainage mean that on very wet days, raw sewage covered the floor'
