“Fingers of smoke.”

Understanding fire and smoke behavior tells us that it takes a lot of pressure to force smoke out of small openings. Knowing this tells us that there is likely fire nearby.

Finding fire in these voids can often be the key to winning or losing legacy fires.

Try not to get distracted by the visible fire. That’s the “easy” part. Look at what the smoke is telling you: where the fire is going. Notice the fingers of smoke on the bravo side.

The real work begins in stopping it from taking the whole cockloft.
