I don't know if these are hard numbers, but the idea is that different students need different exposure numbers or repetitions.
As someone who exclusively works with students with the most severe cases of reading weaknesses, I have observed that even within this cohort of kids

Or my favorite from Mark Twain. “Data is like garbage. You better know what you are going to do with it before you collect it.”

“I am worrisomely seeing in California that there is becoming more loyalty to past methods that have been shown to be ineffective for our most struggling readers. We can never put loyalty to past methods over loyalty to our children.” - Dr. Maryanne Wolf

Why are informational or narrative non-fiction books so important to include in schools?

They help children to make real-world connections. Non-fiction books can be used to enhance children’s experiences and interests AND introduce them to 🆕 experiences.

Why have these new standards if they aren’t going to be enforced, ⁦Tony Thurmond⁩ ⁦Gavin Newsom⁩?

“Critics question accreditation of a “program they say won't adhere to new standards on structured literacy”

New article in ILA 'The Reading Teacher' by Devin Kearns and Matthew J. Cooper Borkenhagen that's worth reading. (Paywall - sorry!) ila.onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/abs/10.100…
Expands on important stuff about how people learn that Mark Seidenberg talked about in Ep 10. of Sold a Story.

there was some buzz today about whether teaching using is a good idea. short answer: it is. longer: initial teaching using EI reduces working memory load & builds fluency--facilitating later generalization... Martin (2016) explains: researchgate.net/profile/Andrew…

It’s not even that hard though. Here, I’ll give everyone the formula:

“One study suggested there might be a connection between x and y, but more research is needed.”

This has been drilled into PhD students since the dawn of time.

Christopher Such I conducted an experimental study comparing two approaches that both involved meaningful engagement with the same texts under same conditions. I found benefits on proximal measures when instruction focused on text structure vs. question answering.

Lots of research into reading comprehension involves an intervention group engaging meaningfully with text while also doing X, Y and Z.

This is then compared to a control group *not* engaging meaningfully with text.

Consequently, people assume we need to teach X, Y and Z.

“Literacy is an experiment humankind ran on itself.”

So is the “cacophony” of info we receive in digital formats.

Ezra Klein’s podcast with Maryanne Wolf is really thought-provoking:

This video is a 🙌 investment of 8 mins of your time. I’ve added it to my most recent blogpost on the folly of sending bulk sets of so-called sight-words home for parents to teach to their children. This practice needs to be retired.

Benefit to teaching *phonological awareness ALONE*?

Paper by Melissa Stalega with me and others about whether there is a benefit to teaching PA alone...

Basically:
Teaching PA: better PA
Teaching PA WITH letters: better PA AND better word reading.
