James O'Hanlon No worries. I had a vague memory of seeing Gau's name in my researches. There were other Confederate warships that ended up in South America after the war, as did a number of Confederate Navy officers, including Bulloch himself, for a short time.
But that's another story.
James O'Hanlon Prior to the seizure of the Laird rams, Confederate agent JD Bulloch began a clandestine shipbuilding operation in France, when these vessels were embargoed, Peruvian Navy officers, including Lieutenant Miguel Grau, were sent to Bordeaux and Nantes to examine them for purchase.
A new plaque has been unveiled in #Wirral for Peru's heroic 19th century Naval Hero Grand Admiral Miguel Grau, attended by Peru's ambassador and naval officers. Watch the dedication ceremony: youtu.be/w6Ah2Ee0R7o #Peru #navalhistory #Merseyside
