NEW PAPER: We followed the fate of 40 caribou herds โ€”the southern mountain caribou populationโ€”to assess their trajectory and response to recovery actions. What we found was surprising and bitter sweet: dramatic declines but recent recovery due to controversial measures. ๐Ÿงต (1/n)

This is a great thread and example from Canada of bending the curve on biodiversity loss - and that achieving recovery of threatened spp (Target 4 of the Global Biodiversity Framework) can involve difficult choices (reducing wolf numbers in this case).

Jean-Philippe Lessard $1.8B is earmarked to grants across the Triagency over the next 5y. The percentage increases per year will be 3% (y 1), 3% (y 2), 5%, 8%, 8%. This is a big investment, but there is more that has to be done. We'll continue to advocate for grads/postdocs et al to

congratulations to Support Our Science, Marc Johnson, Andrea Wishart, PhD, and all the post-docs and grad students that advocated for increases to scholarships and stipends. Great to see yesterday's budget, but we must not be complacent! We don't want another 20 years without an increase. 1/2

I am thrilled by the precedent set, and although there is still a ways to go (eg. to index with inflation), this will make it easier to compensate ALL grad students with a living wage. I look forward to a day when we all take fewer students who are better supported.

If you did not realize that Canadaโ€™s most prestigious awards were set to poverty wages and that makes you uncomfortable - I am sorry, but imagine how uncomfortable your students must be living on them. Yes there will be growing pains, but this is still a much needed win.

Happy to see the budget 2024 federal funding increases. However, as others have pointed out, in many cases this will not be enough. $27,000 a year, $21,000 after tuition, is not a living wage. In Vancouver, it isn't even minimum wage. We deserve better than incremental change.

Over the weekend, conditions were favourable on the Kettle River prescribed burn, located around three kilometres northwest of the community of Rock Creek.

In yesterday's federal budget, Canadian grad students finally got the raise they've been waiting 20 years for. My story for Nature.

It reimplements the most common landscape metrics and adds many new metrics related to the shape of polygons. ๐ŸŒฑ
