A4. Vendor consolidation becomes critical. Though often orgs go through expansion and contraction cycles. For many the impact of GenAI, costs and security are driving a current stage of contraction. Understanding the cause for sprawl is a critical engagement for the CIO.

A2 Impacts include costs, technical and opportunity capacity absorption, loss of data governance/maturity and inability to rely on data or processes to achieve business outcomes or planning. The more sprawl the more effort from IT and the CIO and often a nearer horizon.

A1 Sprawl is indeed a problem from nuisance to critical obstacle. The sprawl causes three areas of concern: Cost, Complexity and Loss of Agility. Shadow IT is a partial cause but 'best of breed', white elephants and other enterprise supported elements also impact.

A3 I look at multiple cohorts of comparators. Regional, regional by size, nationally by classification. Some dimensions are pervasive, others need closely aligned context since your organization may not be competing in the same space with another in a different region.

A1 This varies by sector (and within them). Some industries and functions lend themselves to benchmarks while others do not. So in higher ed I would expect fewer than half make substantive use of benchmarks across delivery areas though most use it in narrow criteria.

Myles Suer A4 - When first doing the shift to agile about 10-12 years ago, it was a massive shift. It started off seemingly as a way to not have to estimate projects and the business was really skeptical and not bought into the MVP idea. (1/2)

A4 This will vary. But note that the language and culture may reject the label. Design Thinking methodologies march adjacent to and MVP but may never accept those words. So gets the “language” right and you may find that it isn’t a huge shift.

A3 Listen, learn and communicate. Listen to the wants and needs of the organizations. Learn where your team can make a difference quickly. Communicate the vision, the steps and the partnership between early users and IT.

A2 MVP’s (or any work product) should not be more ugly than effective. Modern shops or platforms should commit to a UX or design standard that does not alienate users even if it (at least so far) falls short of perfection. Lipstick on a sketch becoming a work of art.
