The risks Black people took were awful, documented in Dr. Jim Downs's great book, 'Sick from Freedom.' The help to federal armies was huge: intelligence, labor, changing soldiers' politics, later troops. I documented the role of just one self-freed woman in 'Custer's Trials.'
