Highlighting the many awesome folks who come through Jason Herbert, Ph.D.’s podcast has been a very fun part of these threads, which this week includes both Dr. Lindsay M. Chervinsky & Kelsa, Ben Franklin Fangirl (Taylor’s Version) on Franklin…

in 1796, Fisher Ames spoke in support of the Jay Treaty. Vice President John Adams described it as “one of the best Speeches he ever produced,” even though Ames was “scarcely able to stand upon his legs.” His speech was credited for swinging House support behind the treaty.

Ulysses Grant’s birthday. The finest soldier to ever wear US Army blue. Captured three armies - Fort Donelson, Vicksburg, Appomattox. Destroyed slavery, “the cause and pretext for the rebellion.” Saved the United States and democracy.
Huzzah!

This week friend Dr. Lindsay M. Chervinsky drops in to talk with me & Kelsa, Ben Franklin Fangirl (Taylor’s Version) about Ep. 4 of . We talk about the very real possibility all of this could fail, spies galore, a young Louis XVI (with a head!) & a villainous John Adams?

The Framers and founding generation couldn’t predict the future. They weren’t convinced that the government they created would last, as demonstrated by John Adams’s comments in 1796.

The problem with writing a 434-page book isn’t writing it, or editing it, or the next five rounds of edits.

It’s the last round of page proofs when you are tired and have 24 hours left until the deadline.

Then, you really start to wonder, what the &$*% you were thinking.

150 years ago today, at precisely 8pm, the world of art changed forever.

What happened? A small, independent art exhibition opened in Paris.

It was a financial failure and barely 3,000 people went — but, in time, these artists would come to be known as 'the Impressionists'...

Super excited to share a preview of one of the key arguments of my forthcoming book, *Making the Presidency*. Thanks so much to Mount Vernon for giving me space to talk about democracy - it’s more important than ever.

It was a painful decision to resign from the Gerald R. Ford Presidential Foundation, but necessary. I hope more people around the country will follow Liz Cheney's example and speak out about the threat to our democracy. Time to step up.

Since the Lost Causers are all up in arms today (and seemingly every day; bunch of whiners these people), we're going to state categorically, once and for all, that Grant was a better general than Lee. And if you ask serious historians and military commanders, it isn't even all
