Nelson Mandela cast his vote in the first South African elections without racial discrimination #OTD in 1994. It was the first time Mandela had voted in his life, as under apartheid Black South Africans had no voting rights. Mandela received the 1993 peace prize.

In tribute to those who died in the terrible massacre by apartheid police in Sharpeville, 21st March each year is now designated as Human Rights Day in South Africa, and worldwide as the U.N.'s International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination.

On this day in 1990, Nelson Rolihlahla Mandela, a revolutionary leader, was released from prison after 27 years.
