Every term, I ask my students their biggest takeaway from my ethics course. Invariably the most common response is that they have agency with respectable to their own character. e.g. They can develop intellectual perseverance instead of just accepting they have short attention…

“Wollstonecraft writes beautifully of not only our deep dependence upon each other as we grow in the virtues, but also our own personal accountability to do so.” Thank you for this, ⁦Erika Bachiochi⁩! ncregister.com/commentaries/r…

Somehow I missed this piece by Monica Klem when it came out -- remarks from her Abigail Adams Institute panel with Leah Libresco Sargeant in February. Very much worth reading!

'It is an eternal law of humanity, that the wrongdoer shall suffer from the evils he perpetrates on others.'

It would be interesting to look into how common this was, especially for women; at how many of, eg, the MHS's collections were donated by descendants and how many were donated by collections' subject, and perhaps how many were given during their lifetimes rather than bequeathed.

'The proactive decision to send her papers to Boston herself, rather than trust an executor, illustrates how she inserted herself into the archival process.' Could be as truly said of Elizabeth Sherman Cameron who also sent her papers to Massachusetts Historical Society. masshist.org/beehiveblog/20…

I am about halfway through a review copy of this by Miles Smith IV. Preliminary comments:
1. I wish I had this book the first time I taught Political Thought of the American Founding
2. I’m glad I read it before my final unit on religion, law, and morality.
3. Pre-order this book.

'Put not your trust in princes' is one of the things you can take at face value. Its also good advice, and a daily touch grass reminder of why you shouldn't take too much politics in.

My review of Pity for Evil was published last Friday, but it (and the book itself) is now even more relevant in light of the debates around the Arizona abortion ruling. (See below for some relevant quotes.) Current Monica Klem

She claims that being aware of your own stupidity is a surer path to the virtue of humility than being aware of your own sinfulness. I think that this is even more true now, in our world of shame-shaming, than when she wrote it.

My review of Pity for Evil is out in Current! I hope this inspires more people to read the book, and for those who don’t have the time or inclination, draws out its most important lessons for the post-Dobbs era.

'I realized that my goal...was...that they have the epistemic literacy to answer the more fundamental question 'Is the problem or controversy before me an actual scientific question or is it something else?'' Good thoughts from Sara. thegothichomeschool.substack.com/p/bio-and-phys…
