My first doula training was with Penny in 1998. She literally started my on a career that's lasted over 20 years now.

her work was really important to me both as a birthing person and non-gestational parent/support person, and i loved that her book the birth partner was quietly revised to be increasingly inclusive

I remember attending a ‘When Survivors Give Birth’ workshop with Penny when I started working as a doula. She was incredible and compassionate. This laid the foundation for my midwifery practice many years later. She will always be remembered as an icon of the birthing world.

Penny, who was a physiotherapist by training and used her understanding of biomechanics to optimize birth, had a way of attracting birth workers of disparate disciplines to learn together and work together in service of birthing folks. It was a fascinating skill of hers. ❤️
