Life for Asians in Britain in the 1970s – a 🧵

Watching #Defiance has brought up some dark memories I witnessed as a teenager in 1970s Britain. Enoch Powell’s speech in 1968 came just sixteen days after the murder of Dr King Jr, emboldened fascists to attack people of colour.

The standard allowance of Universal Credit for a single adult rises from £85 to £91 a week - around £30 below what our research shows is needed to afford essentials.

💥 The shortfall is almost £60 for a couple, and larger still for young people under 25. 2/5

🗓️ Today is the 7th anniversary of the two-child limit to benefit payments.

7 years of families being subjected to the limit to benefit payments and being pushed into poverty.

🗣️ In this election year all parties must commit to scrapping this unfair sibling tax. #AllKidsCount

5,579 suicides were registered in England in 2023, equivalent to a provisional rate of 11.1 suicide deaths per 100,000 people.

This rate was statistically significantly higher than in 2022 and is the highest rate we have seen since 1999.
