Research explored the oxygen levels of critically ill children in intensive care. The study found that with reduced oxygen targets:
💙50 more children would survive in the UK each year
💰 the NHS could save £20 million per year.

There is a crisis in clinical academia in the UK. We talk of the need to expand medical schools, embed research into the NHS to improve care, & the importance of a vibrant life sciences sector for the economy of the UK, & yet we seem unable to tackle the underlying issues 1/9

definitions discussion here, relevant for . In our world, sepsis is not a screening tool - we need to treat more than the children who meet these criteria. This definition can be an outcome to drive our research forward on better screening.

Just published at PicPod.net, PicPod77 on the OxyPICU trial results with study lead Mark Peters Mark Peters. It's a blockbuster trial for , with results which should impact management globally. How was it done, what do the results mean, and how can we implement?

Aiming for lower oxygen targets in critically ill children being ventilated in intensive care could save lives and reduce the length of time that organ support is needed, a large UK-wide study has shown

Great to see this important PICU trial published, comparing SpO2 of 88-92% vs >94% in critically ill kids. TL:DR conservative oxygen gets you off organ support faster, with no evidence of harm (mortality non-significantly down, but PiCU mortality is low) thelancet.com/journals/lance…
