A look back at Turkey's 2023 elections and the factors that explain the robustness of competitive authoritarianism.

Glad to be part of this Special Issue with a paper discussing a new type of militarization in LATAM, namely #GreenMilitarization (i.e., use of militaries in pursuing conservation tasks). Drawing from the Colombian war on deforestation as a case study, we found the following:

These acts of nullifying election results via judicial justifications/excuses (also in the form of appointing trustees in the last local elections) do not only talk to the state of fairness/freedom of elections. They show who is considered a citizen and who is not in Turkey.
