Happy ! Alice Thornton (1626-1707) used word play in her books. In Book 1, we find an acrostic poem for her older brother, George Wandesford (1623-1651), and an anagram of his full name. Can you guess it? Clue: 17thC spelling at work!

Delighted to be spending next week in Finland as a visiting scholar at Tampere University. My public lecture will be on the Capuchin Benet of Canfield & I'll also be discussing 17thC mysticism at a fab looking symposium on the topic!

As we approach the time when wisteria bursts into full bloom. The facades of many buildings are adorned with this exquisite climber, its fragrant mauve or white flowers painting a picture of late spring. One such masterpiece is a 17thC home, majestically perched in the village.

Been quiet lately... my current research on fluor albus (thrush) is not everyone's taste 😂 but soooo interesting!

A euphemism was 'weakness of the back' and women's diseases are often 'not proper to expose to the Publick'.

Layers of shame to work with! 551.a.32[12]

There was a house here, as shown in this 19thC Richard Relhan work, lost before major heritage funding was possible. But 17thC stables survive, where the Earl Godolphin later bred his Arabian horses, as do the ditches that formed a defensive ring dating as early as 3rdC BC. /3

Wallpaper, late 17thC

The pattern is almost certainly adapted from decorative plasterwork. This wallpaper was found at 8 West Street, Epsom, Surrey. This was a relatively modest house, probably built for a London merchant.
