Rowtor Rocks in Derbyshire is an unusual place, natural rocks formations carved into mystical shapes in the late 18thc. But it seems to have been an important site much earlier, with Bronze age carvings, like this rare quarter-sun, still visible on the stones

16 April.
7.6 miles 🥾🥾 from Culloden House to Culloden Moor-REALLY following the Jacobite Prince who was here 278 years before.
The original 16thC Culloden House was Jacobite battle HQ. Mostly burnt down in retaliation it was rebuilt in the 18thC.

1/ Did the masquerade ever get ‘too political’? It’s a tricky question. Because the answer is yes and no. Dressing as ‘a Highlander’ was one of the more contentious choices of masquerade costume—especially during the 1740s.
