TW: Indian Residential Schools

We extend our deepest sympathies to theʕaaḥuusʔath (Ahousaht) First Nation as they release the preliminary findings of their search for unmarked graves and missing children from the 2 former residential schools in their territory.

Old-growth Western Red Cedar (Thuja plicata) in British Columbia. It's actually related to cypress, not the true cedars. It's estimated to be 1,000 years old. It's almost 150 feet tall(45 m).The base is 16.5 feet wide(5 m).Its trunk widens as you go up! Ahousaht First Nation land

Yesterday we took a boat from Tofino to the Thunderbird Hall in Ahousaht to document the ongoing research behind the children that were sent to Ahousaht Indian Residential School and Christie Indian Residential School.

Important work Ahousaht is doing. Sending all my love. My father and the parents of all my childhood friends attended Christie Residential “school” aka institution of genocide. The grief is still here, the pain remains but the healing must begin.

Ahousaht territory is pure magic.

RCMP Ahousaht / Maaqtusiis is located on the SE tip of Flores Island, about 30 mins by boat from Tofino, on Vancouver Island's west coast. Their RCMP detachment coin has a map with a red dot to show where this community is located. It's a bit remote!

This massive #oldgrowth red cedar is located in Ahousaht territory in Clayoquot Sound, BC. Despite their importance, irreplaceable old growth forests continue to be logged. Over 1,100 people have been arrested trying to keep them standing.
