So #Archive30 is tackling the topic of #ArchiveMyths today.
We've got two - the first is that you can't access the collection unless you can get here in person and the second is that you need to be a member. 1/2

#ArchiveMyths : 'Archives are boring.'
Archives are where you solve mysteries and uncover things that people forgot about long ago.🔎
My favorite was finding artist Richard Beyer's abandoned installations at the zoo:

“It’s all online now anyway.” No! Digitisation takes an extraordinary amount of time, money & resources, & presents its own conservation challenges (e.g. how to store the digital files & make them accessible). Nothing beats seeing the original anyway! #ArchiveMyths #Archive30
The idea of 'dusty archives' is one we constantly have to debunk. Our. Archives. Are. Not. Dusty.

One large #ArchiveMyth is #TheWhiteGloveDebate , on whether you should be wearing cotton white gloves whilst handling archival documents, we have created this helpful graphic to answer this common archive question!🧤

There are quite a few #ArchiveMyths (all archivists wear cardigans & gather dust in the strongrooms being a common one) but the one we encounter on an almost daily basis is that researching the history of a house is as easy as it looks on the telly. It’s not! #Archive30 ARA Scotland
For #ArchiveMyths of #Archive30 we have the myth that Archivists love white gloves. While gloves are recommended to handle photographs, dry, clean hands are much better for handling rare books and documents. In fact wearing gloves can do more harm than good!
Plenty of #ArchiveMyths for this unique place Bromsgrove School The tunnel built by HM Jacob, 'to stop noisy heavy footed boys across his front garden' or 'to stop female members of the household looking at the boys' ? Whatever the truth, it's a favourite tour stop! #Archive30
Today’s #Archive30 is #ArchiveMyths We always thought our Girls’ Dux board was just inspired by Charles Rennie Macintosh’s style of lettering but a bit of digging by one of our volunteers and she found out it was actually created by him in 1906! #HutchieHistory
We do wish folks would stop referring to 'd*sty' archives - as the friend of pests which want to eat our archive, d*st is our mortal foe! #ArchiveMyths #Archive30 #1921Census #walworth
It is one of the great #ArchiveMyths that archives are dusty. They aren't. However they can sometimes be a little dirty. Especially records that have come from factories and other industrial places. 😟 #Archive30
What not to wear in an archive...white/cotton gloves!

#ArchiveMyths no 1 - the National Library of Scotland only collects maps of Scotland 🏴
FALSE - our collection is international, and you'll find world maps and atlases of the universe on our shelves 🌎🌌
This is a Public Service Announcement about wearing white cotton gloves when handling archives…
DON’T DO IT!
We rarely ask researchers to wear gloves at all but if handling photographs and negatives we use powder free nitrile gloves

#ArchiveMyths we are happy to debunk is that we wear white gloves when handling documents. Gloves are only used for handling photographs & some objects. For documents, dry, clean hands are best as gloves reduce dexterity & can cause damage to paper documents. ARA Scotland #Archive30
Not really #ArchiveMyths more of a legend is the story of Guy Earl of Warwick and The Dun Cow.
On 17th of July 1876 Matthew Bloxam showed the Rugby School Natural History society a shoulder blade of some large animal, which
used to be called that of the Dun Cow.

Apparently in 1819 5 members of the Tin Plate Workers Society were transported to Tasmania for the crime of belonging to a union, but we have never been able to confirm details. If anybody can help explode one of our #ArchiveMyths , we would love to hear it! #Archive30 ARA Scotland
