In 1983 astronaut Sally Ride became the first American woman to go to space.
While formal women physicians were uncommon in the nineteenth century, many women served as nurses to their families. Books such as The Family Nurse by Lydia Maria Child (1837) offered a variety of remedies for different ailments. #ArchivesWomenInSTEM
Mary Lyon (1797-1849) was a pioneer in women's education. In 1837, she founded Mount Holyoke Female Seminary. Unlike most other female seminaries at the time, Mount Holyoke required at least 7 science/math courses to graduate. Mary even taught chemistry! #ArchivesWomenInSTEM
During WWII, many women joined the STEM field by working in industry or joining an auxiliary service, where they performed a wide variety of skilled jobs
