The underwater camera shows what hundreds of hours of untreated 💩 pouring from this burst manhole has done to the riverbed of the Kennet, coating what should be clean gravels.

This is new development being built in Linton.The water is running into the River Granta,a chalkstream river.Locals and the Parish Council are concerned that the river will be polluted because of this development, as water comes off the road.

Great turn out of #rivertest keepers today whose livelihood depends on a healthy river.
Southern Water got wind of our plan and so are waiting for a quiet window to dump their sewage into the SSSI chalkstream.
We ain’t go anywhere though..

9 months on, this reach of the #RiverTest restored by the Trust last year shows excellent improvement.
🌊 Meanders have been re-introduced to the straightened and overwide channel.
🌱 The chalkstream plant community is beginning to respond to faster flows and cleaner gravels.

Today’s chalkstream destruction story comes from the River Rib in Hertfordshire.
I wonder if the environment agency will follow up on the report and (heaven forbid) consider prosecution. This is the second time in five years the farmer has dredged this stretch.

First time since October ‘23 none of the sewage works on the Pang red. Should be the norm but look at the total number of hours for the last 4 months. 4316hrs, that’s 180 days of sewage dumped into a tiny #chalkstream and this is Thames Water’s chosen chalk stream for recovery 🤑

Cleared a willow that fell recently - it’s offered up a superb looking deep pool around its hinged over rootball and opened up access to the very enticing gravel run above. This is perfection, working with not against the #chalkstream and it’s already hoaching with wild brownies.

The upper reaches of the #GaywoodRiver not far from its spring sources in #Grimston . You can see the results of years of dredging. But look how the Fool’s Watercress and other riparian plants, when left, begin to create natural meanders that speed up the flow. #chalkstream

The Thames Water 💧 EDM map show there are only 6 discharging assets, by far the worst is the Chesham STW at 1170 hrs. I have requested an urgent update. I don’t need to remind Thames Water this is a Smarter Water Catchment , a Flagship Chalkstream & non-compliant activity.
