The FLDOE passed a set of rules that impacted our classroom libraries - adding responsibilities to both teachers & media specialists. They said these rules would cost $0 to implement.

Here’s the reality in one district - this is MS pay over the summer to approve books.

It’s not just books that are being banned and censored, so are authors. Schools and libraries that hosted author visits every year no longer are. Yes, money is a factor, but in most cases, it’s because of the climate of fear and hate created by the misguided and their ignorance.

One thing districts can do is have clear policies around author visits and to exhibit courage. Having a children's author speak to a school is appropriate, no matter what a small smattering of vocal parents might say. Don't let shame/fear dissuade you from kids hearing authors.

A reminder about #HB900 - Librarians are not required to rate books; that job is left to vendors in the bill. Deadlines in the bill are below. Districts need to wait for these steps and advice from TEA, TSLAC, TASB and Texas Library Assn. before taking steps.
