BREAKING: Gov. Abbott signed into law, which will ban books about LGBTQIA+, Black, and Brown experiences in public schools.

Lawmakers have no right taking away the freedom of Texas students to read — just because they don’t believe certain people are worth reading about.

Tortillas=Lonjas ACLU of Texas The law specifically calls out sexually explicit content. I’m not sure where the “brown kids” comment comes from. I scanned through the bill and can find no mention of race or topics involving race at all. legiscan.com/TX/text/HB900/…

It is harmful to students. Students need access to a wide range of materials in order to learn and grow. This bill would limit their access to information and ideas.

creates new categories of books and materials that would either be completely banned in public school libraries or subject to restriction.

Many categories are extremely broad or undefined — like materials that are “sexually relevant” or “educationally unsuitable.”

Read. 'Its vote for “Maus” will not consider questions of appropriateness, only whether the book could conceivably be found in violation of state law.' Even though the law itself has a provision for art and scientific importance. jta.org/2023/06/14/uni…

A reminder about - Librarians are not required to rate books; that job is left to vendors in the bill. Deadlines in the bill are below. Districts need to wait for these steps and advice from TEA, TSLAC, TASB and Texas Library Assn. before taking steps.

gives the state the power to get books pulled off shelves, furthering some politicians’ goals of censoring books about gender, sexuality, and race.

We'll say it again and again: Texas students deserve access to books that reflect their diverse identities. Full stop.

Texas bill requiring book ratings in schools 'creates new government power to limit what books can be available in schools for all to read — a power that could easily be exercised subjectively and influenced by political motives,' says Jonathan Friedman 📚 pen.org/press-release/…

What a day and what an honor. To be in the room when HB900 was signed into Texas law. So incredibly grateful for Rep. Jared Patterson and the MANY Texans who had a hand in protecting minors from sexually explicit materials in schools.

“[ ] is going to be deployed in such a way that a lot of students are going to miss out on chances to see representation of themselves in their schools and in their libraries.”

Students should be able to read the books that represent them.

The amount of people upset that kids won’t be able to access porn because of HB1181 passing & HB900 passing is TELLING! 🤢 It’s also the same reason that Porn Hub boycotted Utah after they passed a similar bill. Mark my words… THE KIDS ARE THE TARGET!

When it comes to…
