Been a bit since I’ve shown some here is some printed binding waste in which the cover boards are made of built-up recycled pages- enjoy!

A highlight from the workshop at
Was the fragment torn before it was used to bind another MS? Was it torn in the repurposing process? Notice the pen marking around the tear. It's a two-piece puzzle!

This tattered cover was made from a leaf of a MS of the Alphabetum narrationum, a collection of exemples written by Arnold of Liège around 1300. More than 100 MSS are extant: a very popular work, not only among binders! (Zentralbibliothek Zürich, Rq 372)

In the Sloane Herbarium I periodically come across instances where parts of older printed books have been used for mounting specimens. So far I just use Google Books to identify the source text where I can. Here are a few examples Fragmentarium (1/4)

Preparing a talk on translations of medical texts rn. This looks like a chapter list from a MS on eye diseases. Who has an ID? (UB Basel, UBH Bc V 229)

Well that was a lot of fun! End of 2nd day of our workshop led remotely by the heroic Bill Endres - we will play with the results of today’s digital RTI photography in the final session tomorrow. Thanks to Dr N. Kıvılcım Yavuz (she/her) Jodie Double & all!

As part of the St John's Digitization Project, several of our fragments are being photographed, making them more accessible for study. Keep an eye out for more sneak previews!

This beautiful spine of a book from 1640 at University of Nottingham Manuscripts & Spec Coll has more to it than meets the eye at first glance. In fact, it looks as though the binding process uses fragments of manuscripts from earlier centuries. What do you think, NorseLass?

Augustine was hugely popular reading, so his MSS are bound to turn up as covers. Here a lovely early-13th-c copy of the Enarratio in Psalmos. (Genève, Musée historique de la Réformation, MHR O4e(534))

I knew there were scrapbooks of manuscript initials, but am just learning about the equivalent practice with early printed books, like this example from Oberlin's Special Collections
