.Prof. Karen Masters 💫⭐️✨ tells us all about galaxyzoo, a crowdsourced astronomy project that‘s classified many thousands of galaxies and been used in over a thousand papers! One important result: there are blue spirals and red ellipticals. Color /= morphology!

What causes spirals in galaxies? Jerry Sellwood at shows that perturbations (e.g. a cycle of “grooves” in the center) is required to form spiral arms - smooth disks don’t work. The bar in the center of the galaxy also can’t fully explain the spirals.

RT KarenLMasters In the end, Korsaga finds 25% of her galaxies don’t need dark matter to explain their rotation curve data. Korsaga et al. 2019.

It's a poster with animation; it's practically from Hogwarts! Anyone at should come and find out what spatially-resolved SFHs can tell us about dynamics and mechanisms of non-axisymmetric disk structures.

Cosmological simulations are vital to gain insight into how galaxies form, and higher resolution + better feedback are improving sims. Oscar Agertz warns though to carefully choose what questions you ask when studying the history of individual galaxies.
