Conflict and war are a major threat to the preservation of the world's heritage and archaeological sites. On 26 June, MAEASaM joins the international community in celebrating the United Nations Charter and promoting world peace.

1/4 The #MAEASaM - #NMK workshop took place on the 15th – 16th April 2024 in Nairobi and focused on reviewing our progress in #Datacollection , #remotesensing , and #database development. Team leaders highlighted key achievements, challenges, and the lessons learned along the way.

To help document and monitor sites, it's important to see them on the ground. To help with this, we have been using #KoBoCollect on recent field verification missions in Kenya, Senegal, Tanzania, Zanzibar and Zimbabwe!

MAEASaM project is working to identify and document endangered archaeological heritage sites across eight African countries, dated from the Palaeolithic/Early Stone Age to the 20th century

Although they contain a mine of information, working with old maps in GIS can be tricky especially when important metadata (projection, datum, etc) are missing.

The Island of #Meroe is a vast #WHS c. 200 kilometers north of Khartoum in #Sudan . The property has several monumental sites including the Royal City of the Kingdom of Kush from c.280 BCE to 350 CE.

The MAEASaM Zimbabwe team from the National Museums and Monuments of Zimbabwe @Zimmuseumofhum1and National Museums and Monuments of Zimbabwe conducted a ground verification mission of sites on #Mutoko landscape of eastern #Zimbabwe where #Zimbabwe Style architectural remains were documented for future monitoring.
