Loved Anthony Bale’s 𝕬𝖓𝖙𝖍𝖔𝖓𝖞 𝕭𝖆𝖑𝖊 📚🐈⬛🏳️🌈 subtle and highly sympathetic biography of #MargeryKempe in A Mixed Life.
Still stuck on his reading of Margery’s cycles of emotion, through despair > sinfulness > dread > tears > joy.

Margery Kempe blue plaque at St Nicholas' Church, Great Yarmouth. She was an English Christian mystic, known for writing through dictation 'The Book of Margery Kempe', a work considered by some to be the first autobiography in the English language

In 2023 we celebrate 650 years since visionary & mystic #MargeryKempe was born. Join Leah Stuttard on 3-5 April to learn about the music Kempe might've heard & explore how singing and walking can produce wellbeing now just as they did in centuries past...

'Margaret was a prophetess' (twice spoken in R3) in 15th century England just like Margery Kempe. 'plenteous tears', 'high perfection', & 'I cry thee mercy' each appear only in R3. All 3 appear in Margery's book. Did Shakespeare read Kempe's book? It seems likely. #margerykempe
Margery says 'I pray you, sir' followed by 'give me leave to tell you' in Chapter 13. So, google these two phrases in quotes. The top search returns are links to Shakespeare's play 2H4. Did Shakespeare recall Margery's tale to a monk in Canterbury? #margerykempe #shakespeare
I’m in the eternal city of Rome, visiting St Birgitta’s spiritual home. Sister Maria showed me where Margery Kempe stayed. It’s simultaneously the 650th anniversary of Kempe’s birth, Birgitta’s death and Julian of Norwich’s ‘Showings’. #margerykempe #pilgrimage #julianofnorwich
Thanks to everyone who came tonight and to the marvellous KettsBooks for organising tonight's reading - I had a wonderful time and it was a joy to talk about #JulianofNorwich and #MargeryKempe with such an enthusiastic audience! 📚🌟💙
We commemorate today, in her home town King’s Lynn, Margery Kempe: medieval mystic, European pilgrim, honest writer, and some character. Art project on display by Steam House Cafe. Quote from Margery: ‘Pacyens is more worthy than myraclys werkyng’ (old English!) #MargeryKempe

Our latest episode in our Debut Spotlight series is highlighting #debutauthor Victoria MacKenzie & her incredible novel pictured below! We LOVED this book and being inside the mind of #julianofnorwich and #margerykempe for a little while (cont)
Good night from the King’s Lynn to Norwich pilgrimage…

Welcome, bewitching hardback! I love this book, from the cover right down to its celestial bones. (Margery would be loving all the attention, Victoria MacKenzie 🥰.) #MargeryKempe #JulianofNorwich
Claiming #sanctuary in a #Medieval church. Resting in peace, what dreams may come?
With no-one from whom to ask permission, save the buried ancestors, I slipped £20 in the wall-save in the morn. Fair exchange, imo.

Today is the feast day of #MargeryKempe in the Church of England - a slightly curious idea, given that I don't think the C of E has a mechanism for canonisation. Margery knew York and York Minster, and other sites of pilgrimage (and clerical confrontation) in Yorkshire.
It ends with an imagined account of the 1413 meeting between #MargeryKempe and #JulianofNorwich . The book is about loneliness, loss, resilience, and the problem of being a passionate religious woman in a male-dominated medieval church twitchy about heresy.
Depictions of #MargeryKempe can be found in print in the local history children's books 'King's Lynn & The Hanseatic League' (2015) & 'Margery Kempe of Lynn' (2019). Sculptures of her were unveiled in Oroso, Spain (2020) [edp24.co.uk/.../20658444.s…] & King's Lynn Minster (2022). [3/3]
Norwich Cathedral: a human-wrought vision of heaven.
Though the clanging of stacking chairs, and their scraping on ancient stone floors, was hellish indeed.
Balance in all things.
