Reading about the new guidance - some good developments - more weighting towards environment and EDI as an indicator, broader evidencing of impact but 'decoupling individuals from outputs' may be used as a way to take away research time (1/2)

Of all the things that might prove ‘devastating for UK research excellence’ - like, ah, weak govt funding, restrictions on international students, Brexit - ‘slashing’ 🤔 the outputs measure from 60% to 50% wouldn’t be top of my list.

just announced. How utterly depressing! Another £300+ million and hundreds of persons-years of effort squandered on faux peer review to confirm the status quo. There has to be a better way, I just want to get on with research and teaching. Its a total waste of time!

Good to see explicitly addressing previous confusion (prompted by the 2* benchmark wording) around the value of 'research on or issues'. Very welcome, given the huge importance of -based , and its impact on communities across the UK.

Good to see #REF2028 explicitly addressing previous confusion (prompted by the 2* benchmark wording) around the value of 'research on #local or #regional issues'. Very welcome, given the huge importance of #place-based #research, and its impact on communities across the UK.

Irrespective of the decisions now been released, let's just do better to look after each other. Unis across the UK are in turmoil; hundreds of courses being cut, redundancies, major faculty restructures, shaky prospects. This shouldn't be the time to be in competition

changes look promising. Research excellence is essential, but current pressures can be harmful to people & the science. I believe most people do their best work when they feel valued, in an environment that balances research & engagement in a nurturing, diverse culture.

The 'decoupling of individuals from outputs' is deeply worrying in terms of both workload pressures and access to research time.
