It is day 4 of and I present to you a Gulf Pipefish! These cute little guys can be found in saltmarshes all along the coast. Just like Seahorses, the males keep the eggs in a pouch until they hatch. They're one of 4 Sygnathids species found in TX.

Happy to all Dads out there! To celebrate here is the Knysna Seahorse, like all sygnathids theyre front runners for awards, as the males brood the eggs in a 'false' pregnancy before giving birth.

Sygnathids aren't the only that give live birth - there are many others including the guppy family (Poeciliidae), halfbeaks (Hemiramphidae and Zenarchopteridae, and catfish (Auchenipteridae) . All of these groups independently evolved livebearing. fact

I'm on both teams, but I have to admit that there is nothing weirder than the # and diversity of Sygnathids (seahorses, seadragons, and pipefishes). Look at the little tiny pygmy seahorse in the corner, it's the size of a thumb nail, max! So cool and weird.

How many voters will have ever seen a leafy seadragon (not in an aquarium)? Good to see two cool sygnathids in the top five: if you want to weedy seadragons in abundance, Flinders and Portsea (Victoria) are prime spots

Let's start off with one most people know... Male seahorses and pipefish (also known as sygnathids) carry eggs and give live birth (viviparity)! Females deposit the eggs into a male's pouch using an ovipositor. #fishfact#fish#coolfishfact

Milton Tan Prosanta Chakrabarty I was only aware of one species: the King Checkerboard (Crenicara punctulata), being hermaphroditic, did not know that there was an entire list!

Also, us freshwater scrubs have Sygnathids too ๐Ÿ‘‰๐Ÿ‘ˆ

When I SAY seahorses I do mean sygnathids as a whole. They're so sensitive to everything! Always have mysterious diseases!! If they go off one single feed suddenly its the end of the world!!! Also drama queens that WILL NOT STAND for being fed FROZEN food. Don't you know who I AM
