Does learning persevere when have the freedom to tinker? Self-directed learning has an effect size=0.67 per the latest research. Watch how a rural Kentucky town allows student curiosity to lead to mastering technical tools and skills.

Tom Sherrington Geoffrey Petty oliver caviglioli Education and Training Foundation (ETF) Visible Learning EducationEnhancement EEF 1/ Thanks, exactly what I am trying to bolster - more thinking in the classroom & one way is pupil dialogical discussion. I am in the routine of using all the methods you have mentioned & for every action in the class I assess on a 2x2 matrix of Participation and Thinking (P&T).

Lee Bates Tom Sherrington oliver caviglioli Education and Training Foundation (ETF) Visible Learning EducationEnhancement EEF Absolutely! I love mini white boards and have seen them used to great effect in A level maths and chemistry classes, and elsewhere, instant teacher feedback on class understanding. Lee Bates Tom Sherrington oliver caviglioli Education and Training Foundation (ETF) Visible Learning EducationEnhancement EEF That’s impressive! As well as P&T (thanks for decoding this!) there are of course the issues of feedback to the teacher on degree of class understanding, and accurate feedback to learners as they might agree on an error. This goes deep into these issues. geoffpetty.com/training-mater…

Lee Bates Tom Sherrington oliver caviglioli Education and Training Foundation (ETF) Visible Learning EducationEnhancement EEF If the TEACHER chooses who from a group of 3 (or even 4) answers on behalf of their group then participation is good. Fears that peers would cross if group thinking is misrepresented keeps P&T high. “Better understand this teacher might ask me”

Tom Sherrington Geoffrey Petty oliver caviglioli Education and Training Foundation (ETF) Visible Learning EducationEnhancement EEF 3/ I appreciate the Assertive Questions helps to maintain the discussion as it transitions from the small group into the whole class and it does this by delaying the judgement by the authority figure but again in this big group the P&T goes down as the group size goes up.
