It took my sister 5 hours to drive from Yellowknife to Behchoko tonight (normally 1). The last 50km they followed a pilot vehicle. She said it’s lightly raining now. Hoping to get to Fort Providence. Slow going. #NWT wildfires

Wishing all impacted by the NWT/Behchoko wildfires safety and community during this time 🧡

The City is issuing an Evacuation Alert for some areas of the city because of the real potential threat to public safety due to the Behchoko/Yellowknife wildfire (ZF015).

The Evacuation Alert is for the following areas:
- Kam Lake
- Grace Lake
- Engle Business District.

EDIIWA WEYALLON HANDGAMES TOURNAMENT in Behchoko, NWT

I had the pleasure of meeting with Tłı̨chǫ Grand Chief Jackson Lafferty and MLA Jane Weyallon Armstrong in Behchokǫ̀ last week to discuss a wide range of issues related to collaboration and current and future housing initiatives in the region.

1400 vehicles crossed the Dehcho bridge on Wednesday. We escaped #Yellowknife that evening but pulled over for a couple of hrs of sleep once we passed the Behchoko fires. I’m curious about the # that crossed the bridge on Thursday, when we did, the convoy of vehicles was so long.

🟠 Last week a few Hotıì ts’eeda team members had the chance to visit the Tłı̨chǫ Government’s Department of Culture & Lands Protection Research Expo in Behchokǫ.

🧡 What a great event, this was such a fun opportunity to connect with the community!

While the Behchokǫ̀/Yellowknife Fire (ZF015) is being held, the Evacuation Order remains in effect. That said, we are inching closer to welcoming residents home, and the planning for a safe re-entry has begun: yellowknife.ca/en/news/yellow…

Jason Card is a man from Yellowknife in Canada, but when he heard about a nearby wildfire in Behchoko, Jason decided to take one risk.

Defying evacuation orders, he went to the area for one mission: to rescue any pets left behind.

Glad I don’t live in Yellowknife anymore. However I’m sad for those that do, and beyond words for those from Katlodeeche, Thebacha, JMR, and Enterprise.

Highway 3 between Behchokǫ̀ to Yellowknife (km 272 to km 334) has re-opened to southbound traffic. It will remain closed to NORTHBOUND traffic from Behchokǫ̀ to Yellowknife. dot.gov.nt.ca/Highways

Yesterday in Behchokǫ̀, I met with the Tłı̨chǫ Government to discuss the upcoming wildfire season, and steps we’re taking in #Budget2024 to support Indigenous wildfire response and recovery efforts.

Thanks to Grand Chief Lafferty, Chief Daniels and Michael McLeod for welcoming us.

Indigenous communities in the NWT have been seriously affected by the recent wildfires.

My first stop was in Behchokǫ̀, to meet with Tłı̨chǫ Government leaders, whose resilience and wisdom are invaluable in addressing the challenges posed by our changing climate.
