A bee fly (Diptera: Bombyliidae) collecting sand for her eggs. The female coats her eggs in sand, prior to flicking them like little bombs into the nests of solitary wasps and bees.

This 'egg-bombing' behaviour can be seen here: youtube.com/watch?v=whRkZ1…

This may be my favorite photo from the desert last weekend. It's a tiny, fuzzy bee fly (family Bombyliidae) on a Desert Dandelion. Bee flies parasitize other insects, including ground-nesting bees. It was only 5-6 mm. long, not counting the Doctor-Seussian beak.

Bee fly, Bombyliidae.
The bee fly is able to shoot its eggs directly into the wild bee breeding tubes from a hovering position.

Did you know? Cutiefly & Ribombee are inspired by Bombyliidae which are “Japanese Bee Flies”. They feed on nectar and pollen, being important pollinators. EVERYTHING IS CUTER IN JAPAN!!!! 😍🐝💕🌸

Hunchback Bee Fly (Bombyliidae)

Captured this incredible moment of a hunchback bee fly.

Bee fly larvae are parasitic, targeting solitary bee or wasp nests. Female bee flies lay eggs near nest entrances, and when they hatch, the larvae parasitize the host's young.…

Friday Flyday: Here's a fuzzy little fly with attractively-patterned wings (zoom in, they're cool), on the desert floor amid corkscrew-shaped Stork's-Bill seeds (not a native plant, but here since the 18th century). I think it's a species of bee fly, family Bombyliidae.
