Please don’t mow or spray the dandelions. They are a lifeline for pollinators including bees, butterflies, hoverflies. They support over 50 insect species. Our little film shows the life in a small patch 🐝🌼🦋

Can we please have a shout out for hoverflies? These unsung heroes may not be as flamboyant as butterflies or as cute as bumblebees, but they’re important pollinators that also help control pests like aphids.

In a rare synergy of sun and warmth, I watched a ♂ Melanostoma scalare feeding on pollen from a Welsh Poppy (Meconopsis cambrica) blazing away in my garden. He spent a good half hour foraging in this one flower. - Montrose, Angus

Day 88: Wavy Bittercress

An edible low-growing plant that butterflies, moths and hoverflies love.

This plant has been used medicinally and it's seeds can be roasted and used as a substitute for coffee.

Not just a pretty space: as well as reducing water flow into drains &, thereby, sewage discharge, SuDS can reduce flood risk, road runoff, improve urban cooling. This one includes larval foodplants for butterflies & moths, nectar for bees, hoverflies & ladybirds.

🌿🔵 Experience the beauty of bluebell season at Hagbourne Copse, near Blagrove! These blooms are vital for local wildlife, attracting butterflies, bees, and hoverflies. Please stay on designated paths and avoid picking the flowers. 🦋🐝

Also there was a ♀ Platycheirus albimanus engaged in the typical 'head down, ass up' technique for getting at Dandelion nectar. She got absolutely caked in pollen; a few breaks were needed for a wee clean. Job done from the plant's perspective - Montrose, Angus

Some scarce hoverflies enjoying the Creeping Willow at Sheskinmore, Co. Donegal recently: Cheilosia nebulosa and Cheilosia psilophthalma. The latter only has four Irish records, mostly from unimproved grassland where the larvae develop in Mouse-ear Hawkweed.

Things warmed up a bit today! Sunshine brought bees, wasps & hoverflies out in the garden. The dandelion flowers were smothered. Yesterday's sulking, soggy magpie seems to have taken up residence in the garden. Two pairs of swallows now claiming stable nest sites! Yay!
