The stunning Alheide Psalter has now been digitised as part of our Medieval and Renaissance Women project!

The 12th-century manuscript is named after its scribe, a German nun called Alheide, who identifies herself at the end of the volume.

A slightly dull and dreary morning in the archives. Reading about some of the Sisters who spent the majority of their lives in India and Rhodesia around WWII before returning to live out their final days in Cork. Amazed at how well travelled they were.

But even with all the gold, glitter & illuminations, my favorite folio in my favorite manuscript (cos that’s also a thing) is fol. 31r which features a simple but stunning & (self-)portrait (?) of a nun.
Inspired me to write a new , will get to work soon!

It's a bit of an effort to get there, but if you're interested in the Beguines the murals in their church at offer by far the biggest collection of imagery. A whole plethora of saints, and a lot of little Beguine donor portraits.

While writing my new book I did a lot of research, hunting down saints, hiking across wildernesses, seeking out half-forgotten holy wells, and scrambling into crypts. I was searching for stories, I guess.

But the story of faith that affected me most came as a surprise...
