#17 - What are you thankful for this week? One thing on our list is friendly fences that allow to speed along on their migrations. Placement of wires allows fawns to go under, while bucks and does go over.

Mo, the began her migration in late October ahead of the deep winter snow, moving a whopping 70 miles in under a week. She appears to be headed for her traditional stopover spot in the Prospect Mtns, at least for now.

Ever feel stuck, like you're wallowing belly-deep in snow and getting nowhere? Sometimes survival means NOT taking the road less traveled, but using a well-beaten path, like this migrating buck escaping high-country snow on a Wyoming trail.

255 climbed over the Gros Ventre Mountains and zipped around Jackson Hole. She has already passed up some of the best summer range Wyoming has to offer. She would have had a great view of the Tetons from here.

🍂Autumn is coming...

Recent studies of doe mule deer suggest that not only spring BUT late summer and autumn nutrition play a key role in overwinter survival.

Some females also use summer ranges that stay greener🌿 longer into autumn.

And she off!
June 2nd, 2018.
Deer 255 leaves her stopover and heads north. Still migrating, and on pace to match her record from 2016.

255 has a cool backstory. You should read it (2016 bonus map):

captures grounded due to heavy fog in Rock Springs, WY. Lead @Uwyopie and Wyoming Migration Initiative PhD student Anna Ortega is not pleased. The other grad student “volunteers” seem less concerned.
