J. Sawalla Guseh, M.D. It was great to collaborate with you.

You wrote a thoughtful, insightful, and important perspective on the cardiac care of athletes that have hung up their cleats. There is SO MUCH cardiovascular risk in this population who sacrificed physical health during their career.

Iron deficiency is the most common but not the only cause of anemia.

Anemia is a LATE sign of iron deficiency & the majority of patients with iron deficiency won’t be picked up on a CBC.

Iron has many roles & iron deficiency causes many problems other than anemia.

Did you know that before I ran my first 26.2 miles, I held the American Record in the 10k?

On this day in 2001 at the Cardinal Invitational, I did 25 laps faster than any American had before. It is still the fastest 10k I have ever run, and am proud the record stood for 9 years

This is so important.

I see patients all the time who’ve been on oral iron for YEARS.

If patients don’t respond within a few months, you should be making sure you’re treating the underlying cause and at least considering IV.
