Presented at XII Georgian National Congress on Allergy, Asthma & Immunology. Discussed how genomics-based diagnosis and therapy can be helpful in dermatology clinical practice.

I finished my talk with McKusick's quote. He was absolutely right.

Lives are ruined by inappropriate use of food allergy tests.

These were never designed to be used as screening tests, yet they're often used as such.

It is backwards & incorrect to perform a panel, then make a diagnosis regardless of history.

I spend my days undoing this harm.

Another provocative study by Joann Elmore, MD, MPH et al showing that dermatopathologists are influenced by the diagnosis of a previous dermatopathologist. This can even influence them to make an INCORRECT melanoma diagnosis. jamanetwork.com/journals/jamad…

Our new paper is out today. We used CRISPR to uncover some really striking findings with several drugs and drug targets in clinical trials. Also, we accidentally found the first-ever inhibitor of the cyclin-dependent kinase CDK11. stm.sciencemag.org/content/11/509…

Allergy skin testing places a drop of liquid allergen (pollen, food, etc) on the skin then gently scratches through to introduce to the cells in the skin.

If specific IgE is present, histamine is released = itchy raised bump & redness.

Key points:

Bath emollients, silk garments & antihistamines - no benefit in atopic eczema

Topical steroids just as effective used once daily as twice daily
