8-May: Hard slog for Kay (spoilt her day) & me down Bin Combe to mature trees & back - almost devoid of bird song & sightings! Cut our losses & drove to Exmoor. 2 m Pied Flys & Cuckoo East Water roadway; 2 pairs Whinchats, Grey Wag & Cuckoo Chetsford Water, Tree Pipit nearby.

Spent a few hours at RSPB Greylake looking for the Montague's Harrier. It showed once, at a big distance. Other nice things...Bittern flyover, Water Vole (missing an eye), Cuckoo, Yellow Wags, Reed Bunts and fellow birders. RSPB Somerset Birds

Last week I stumbled upon this Tawny Owl chick on the Somerset Levels and Moors. First I have ever seen! I snapped a couple of shots and moved away quickly, so as not to disturb it. What a stare! Somerset Wildlife Trust bto_somerset1 RSPB England

Not a lot to report over the last few days. The four Eyasses are getting bigger. Currently hot and sunny in Taunton so they are all flat out. 😀

Full steam ahead for these nest building Great Crested Grebes this morning at RSPB Ham Wall so maybe a late breeding pair or a second attempt after a failure.

Down to four chicks. One died in the night, possibly stood on too hard by one of the others. It's underneath the ones at the back. Another one seems to have fledged though, possibly on the oil tank below, mum down there with food a lot. bto_somerset1 Somerset Wildlife Trust Dorset Wildlife Trust
