Was happy to feature a traveling trunk from American Battlefield Trust this year! Students engaged in activities that had them looking at various aspects of camp life and warfare. Very student-friendly artifacts and it sparked some great discussions!

Thank you Adam Moler for your 'Virtual Museum' template. For my Pre-Civil War Unit, students created 3 exhibits on 3 themes based on this unit: balance, conflict, resistance/abolitionists.

Very thoughtful responses that go far past any multiple choice or short response question.

Getting closer and closer to the Civil War!
⭐️4(?!)xPOV of candidates in the Election of 1860 & their views on slavery
⭐️Map & Tell of the Election of 1860 Electoral Map to foreshadow sides of the Civil War
⭐️Quick archetype of Lincoln's political pre-1860 political career

For the Fugitive Slave Act of 1850, students explored numbers & documents to immerse themselves in this significant issue. We:
✅Did a Number Mania on stats relating to the act
✅Viewed 1850s ads, posters, & newspapers around the room
✅Made a 'Thin Story' based on 3 of the docs

Behind on grading, but many students got me to stop rushing & take in their amazing work.

Spent some time analyzing primary sources about slavery/resistance. Then had students write an acrostic poem on the word “Resistance” & sketch a visual for it.

THEY DID GREAT!

Shoutout to Lois MacMillan (the 🐐) for her awesome “Picturing Frederick Douglass” lesson! It introduced Mr. Douglass to my classroom by having students analyze pictures of Douglass throughout his lifetime & contemporary depictions of him. Can’t wait to dig into his story more!

Tried something I saw on Twitter called “Dividing the Pie”

Students were given 5 different groups that migrated west & their motivations for going. They then made a pie chart to illustrate their answer to the question: “Were some motivations more influential than others?”

✅Thin Slides: students take the Mexican perspective on Polk stationing troops at border.

✅Zinn lesson: students took on a role of someone impacted by the war & shared with others.

✅3xPOV (thanks Adam Moler ): Students explain 3 different views on the war.

Introduced “King Jackson”& simply asked students if this was a positive or negative photo. It led to a great convo about executive power!

Finished w/ Yelp reviews where students impersonated Andrew Jackson & reviewed the Bank. I told them to get mean & they certainly delivered!

Saw this Comic Book Sketch/Tell and wanted to give it a shot! Thank you Adam Moler for putting it in your blog & Justin Unruh for making it!

Students read about the election of 1800 & had to create a comic strip. The dramatic election was a perfect backdrop for this activity!

The Sedition Act was today & we looked at some of the “victims” of its passage

1. Frayered Sedition Act
2. We looked at stories of those convicted under the act, designed a slide, & presented
3. Emoji paragraph

(Students also enjoyed seeing “arse” in Luther Baldwin’s story 😂)

Created a Structured Academic Controversy based on the ?: “Do you agree with Washington’s warning that political parties are dangerous?” Students were presented w/ opinions on both sides, data on polarization today, and even an (abridged) fed 10 😉

Election of 1800 here we come!
