Important points here. But shifting burden to the essay disadvantages students without access to strong high school advising/writing guidance and further empowers admissions officers to subjectively determine if/when race does or doesn't matter in an applicant's life.

My college essay didn't mention race, BECAUSE I HAD OTHER THINGS I WANTED TO TALK ABOUT. It is a ludicrous example of burden shifting to expect an 18-year-old kid to have to do the heavy lift of explaining how racism works and affected them personally, in this racist ass society.

I am “in my feelings” as they say, watching my colleagues and friends reading along as we read the whole of The Bluest Eye. We are reading for freedom, and against repression and fascism.

In a The New York Times essay, Brown's president says those who try to ban the advancement of knowledge will find themselves 'on the wrong side of history' and she argues for the critical importance of maintaining the free exchange of knowledge. fal.cn/3xBFo
