The tree most noticed here in Southern Maryland right now, due to its flowers, is the Eastern Redbud (Cercis canadensis). You find it flowering in home landscape as well as along the edges of woodlands and roadsides. Native to eastern North America.

are all around us but we usually just take them for granted. One of my favorites, among many, here in Maryland is the American Beech (Fagus grandifolia), a big deciduous tree with smooth grey bark very noticable in winter when not hidden by the foliage.

I visited lots of during my PhD fieldwork. This one in the grounds of National Trust Stowe was really special, measuring almost 6m in circumference! Having retrenched in its old age, it may not be tall but it is certainly mighty & hosts a glowing list of deadwood beetles 🌳🪲
