For the illuminators of Medieval Manuscripts, Rabbits seem to have had a rather sinister reputation - these ones all seem to have homicidal tendencies ....

at the St Francis of Assisi exhibition National Gallery. These intricate illustrations are from the Chronica Maiora II by Matthew Paris, a Benedictine monk from St Albans with an abundant output. The line-work is incredibly fine, a privilege to see in person!

This is Bernard.

Bernard is by far our most popular request for image licensing.

..and we'd like to know why.

Don't get us wrong, we can see that he's lovely, but what makes St Bernard of Clairvaux quite so popular?

Judith of Flanders was exiled in 1065 and died in 1094, leaving her books to Weingarten, where she was buried. This binding, with delicate filigree and cast figures, was added in the last third of the 11th century. Now on view in the East Room!
