This is a great episode of Empire Podcast.

In our new HodderHistory textbook for 13/14 year olds, we tell the story of the Mau Mau rebellion.

But the book also explores the history of that history: of Kenyan oral historians, of Operation Legacy, of the Mau Mau court case.

We hope this will be really useful in supporting colleagues to feel knowledgeable and confident to teach 20thC British social history. It makes the complexity accessible for young people, while avoiding an over simple narrative of 'a century of progress'.

Had a great time at IOE, UCL's Faculty of Education & Society History mentors conference today. Enjoyed the empire theme; sessions by Kim A. Wagner & Justice 2 History were ace. Glad our HodderHistory empire textbook got a shoutout (mainly cos I forgot to tweet a pic of me & physical copy on release day).

It was a great honour (and great fun) to be interviewed by Historians @ Bristol now on Mastodon too alongside Richard about our collaborative work on the Empire textbook. Studying history at Bristol opened my eyes to so much - it's been great to be involved with the department again.

Key takeaway - By weaving Britain's Imperial history through the whole curriculum and not just trying to cover 500 years of history in a 2 or 3 lesson scheme of work we can do better justice to the scale of Empire.

Hodder assembled a cracking team of teachers to create this. If you’re teaching any aspect of the British Empire, I would urge you to invest in a copy. Trust me, I had the privilege of a sneak peek as they put it together. It’s excellent.
