It’s an exciting month MassGeneralChildren and June will be even more exciting when RanaAwdishMD comes to give grand rounds. I just finished re-reading her amazing book — everyone in healthcare should read this!

“A novel is the only place where two strangers can meet on terms of absolute intimacy. The reader and the writer make the book together. No other art can capture the essential inwardness of human life.” —Paul Auster

I love my friends.

I hope this helps people. I hope you feel seen by it and validated by it and understand psychiatry more because of it.

I appreciate you preordering if you do and do NOT take it for granted one bit.

The best antidote to burnout is not teaching people coping skills to handle stress. It's redesigning work to reduce stress.

The cure for exhaustion is removing overwhelming demands and the norm of self-sacrifice.

Healthy workplaces value well-being as much as performance.

I’ve been a doctor for a quarter-century. I care 1000x more about whether you are curious, kind, earnest, & communicate well with both patients & colleagues than whether you have any publications when you apply to med school/residency/fellowship.

Every time we get together and take a piece of space in the world and decide we're going to run it on the principles of care not the principles of profit, we are reminding ourselves that the system we live in is not inevitable or necessary. We could live differently.

Love this research which is truly patient centered. The life altering effects of FATIGUE are often poorly appreciated by provider teams. Fatigue is also particularly is hard to treat. Causing less fatigue in the 1st place is really a worthy primary end point of clinical research.

I can’t express how much I need doctors to stop asking “what’s your pain level today, 0 out of 10” and instead ask, “how is your pain impacting your life?” 🥺

How to improve a meeting (when you’re not in charge). A recent article from Amy Edmondson. The tactics you use depends on the level of psychological safety:
1) The helpful workaround: works when psychological safety is low (on the team or with the person leading the meeting).

Superb and infuriating piece by UC San Francisco colleague (& great writer) Louise Aronson about how her mom's clear, documented wish to avoid aggressive care at the end of life was ignored by a medical team locked into a we-did-this-so-we-must-do-that spiral. NEJM nejm.org/doi/full/10.10…
