Like at the Heacham last weekend twitter.com/numenini/statu…, there were carpets of liverwort (Pellia?) in the River Nar. Also a patch of a huge, flowing macrophyte that may be non-native?

Why would anyone fish manicured fisheries for domesticated farmed fish when wild #ChalkStreams contain wild beauties like this? 😍
Care for your river, and your river cares for you 💙💚
It's still #VolunteersWeek ! We got together with some of our volunteers to celebrate how they are helping us on the #chalkstreams !

Had a great time last week on the chalkstreams last week snorkeling on the Test with Marina Gibson & Jeremy Wade. Lots of Stone loach, minnows, trout and even a salmon parr. Can't wait til the next trip!
It was almost literally nose to tail Brown Trout for the whole 250m of the River Nar up which we swam at West Acre. We must have seen 100s. Mostly small, around 9 inches, a few of about a foot, and one lovely 18 incher.

It was cool today in St Albans Cathedral, the perfect place for a day talking #chalkstreams with the locals, visitors, MP Daisy Cooper MP 🔶, the city's Mayor St Albans Council and more. Thank you everyone for caring so much about the #RiverVer . #StAShowcase #Sustfest23
We swam/snootled up the River Nar from Abbey House, West Acre, past the Gunnera and Weeping Willows, between beautifully vegetated banks, the Elder in full bloom, under baubles of Bittersweet, past the vibrant red roots of the Alders.

With thanks to Charlie Burrell for the introduction, Alec Birkbeck for permission & Charles Rangeley-Wilson for the tip on where to swim, spent yesterday afternoon in a stretch of Brown Trout heaven in the rewilded River Nar at West Acre.

Enthralled by the carpets of liverwort in the River Heacham - I've seen nothing like this anywhere else. Would love to know the species. #WildflowerID
Also lush mosses in the green world of Sedgeford Carr.

Usually Brown Trout face into the current, but this little beauty, sun glinting on her (short nose, concave anal fin) scales, just downstream of a log, was lying perpendicular to the current.

Feargal Sharkey I remember when you could count on finding sparkling clear water in #chalkstreams . There were plenty of fish, mayflies, other aquatic life, and wonderful green flows of #watercrowfoot moving in the current. It makes me so sad and angry to know what has happened to the #rivers and…

This story by Owen Sennitt sheds light on a worrying pattern of inaction and neglect from an underfunded Environment Agency that means countless incidents of pollution from the likes of Anglian Water on the #GaywoodRiver may have been missed. Feargal Sharkey
