We're gonna need a bigger tray! I was admittedly unprepared for this record haul of 56 spotted salamanders (+ newts)....including a spotless individual. All returned to the pond minutes later. #herpetology #amphibian #fieldbiology #Ambystoma
We broke our record tonight. 25 salamanders on 25 square meters of forest in 7 minutes! Didnβt flip a single rock or log. Have to love Southern Appalachia.

Spotted salamanders exhibit tremendous variation in their spot patterns, ranging from no spots, to 'headlights' (spots only on heads), to small dots, to large 'globs', and several other forms #amphibian #herpetology #caudata #fieldbiology
Minnow-trapping season is upon us! We'll start with one of the lesser hauls so far, with a few spotted salamanders, a red-spotted newt, and a bonus marbled salamander larva (kudos to my 10-year-old videographer) #herpetology #amphibian #fieldbiology

Well, it's the end of my field season and my women's Carhartt's have survived everything the borel forest could throw at them... but of course couldn't stand up to thighs... after two repair jobs I'm throwing them out. #womeninSTEM #fieldbiology
