Fascinating work by Damian Shiels and Tara on the 1920 Mallow Barracks Raid as part of the Project.

This project seeks to engage with local communities to help to identify and map sites from the War of Independence.

Great to see the Tipperary Old IRA Map Project featured in today's Independent.ie.

This project is part of the Archaeology Project with Tipperary County Council & Tipperary Studies to examine and research this intriguing map.

A final post. Field boundaries are among the least appreciated elements of our archaeological landscapes, but were fundamentally important during the revolution. At Crossbarry, this one was used by Tom Kelleher's IRA section to fend off a British attack.

The view from the main ambush positions occupied by Anti-Treaty forces at Béal na Bláth on 22 August 1922. Michael Collins and his National Army convoy drove down the road towards this position that evening.

You won't find too many more important laneways in a War of Independence archaeological landscape than this one at Crossbarry. Holding it open to facilitate the withdrawal of the IRA dictated the positioning of the flanking sections, both of whom became engaged. Abarta Heritage

Though in poor condition, the house appears to retain many original features and clearly continues to attract ongoint attention as a site of memory. 2/2

An exciting discovery at our last site of the day, where Tom Barry and his men attacked the RIC Barracks at Rosscarbery, in March 1921. Impact scarring likely relating to the explosion and firing during the attack, visible on a nearby building.

If this was a century ago, ya might see the amphibian landings, or preparations for them, made by Michael Colllins's National Army; or smoke from buildings destroyed in urban fighting and by evacuating Anti-Treaty IRA forces during the .
