As we celebrate #WorldPeatlandsDay , here's junior ranger Robyn with a reminder of why peatlands are such a precious resource in the fight against climate change. #PeatlandsMatter
I see it's #WorldPeatlandsDay any excuse to post this picture of a nest full of Golden Plover chicks! In the UK they breed on upland heaths and bogs. I was monitoring their nests during fieldwork in N.Scotland a few years ago. #Ornithology #Shorebirds
#Worldpeatlandsday The anaerobic conditions in Irish bogs have resulted in the preservation of a unique range
of cultural heritage, including small finds, wooden platforms, & large trackways
& causeways that extend across the bogs for hundreds of metres.
On this #WorldPeatlandsDay let's ask what the future of British upland peat bogs should look like? The restored Sphagnum rich, wet bogs of RSPB Dove Stone or the charred, dry, dying peatlands of driven grouse moors (with bonus melted plastic - lucky us)? I know what I'd prefer...
🧵We are set to significantly increase the pace and scale of peatland restoration over the coming years, with a target of repairing 8000ha of peatlands by 2030. That’s roughly the same area as 20,000 football fields!

We’re collaborating with Ministerio del Medio Ambiente to protect #peatlands by sharing our restoration knowledge.
By working together we can champion #naturebasedsolutions to the twin crises of #climatechange & #biodiversityloss

A day late for #WorldPeatlandsDay but it's never too late to highlight the deplorable state of British peatlands thanks to driven grouse shooting
Burnt to a crisp, eroding away & totally devoid of peat forming species
The world must look on in horror at how we treat peatlands
Happy #WorldPeatlandsDay ! 🌱
Not only do peatlands store 30% of all land-based carbon, they also look beautiful whilst doing so.
It's #worldpeatlandsday & the launch of STACKS, a collaboration between Rose Ferraby, Rob St.John & me. Go to peatstacks.uk & curate your own films to accompany our soundscape that explores the past, present and futures of Bodmin Moor, Dartmoor and Exmoor South West Peatland Partnership

Unfortunately peat erosion is happening at an alarming rate, emitting Organic Carbon to surface water, CO2 to the atmosphere, and loss of blanket bog habitat and species...
It’s World Peatlands day! So I thought I’d share some of my favourite examples from our little corner of the planet! Over 80% of peatlands in NI are degraded, but we’re starting to change that! Ulster Wildlife #worldpeatlandsday #peatlands
