Any chance of a species ID on this Xysticus, which was sitting inside the abdominal cavity of a rotting rabbit corpse and preying upon Hydrotaea muscid flies? Richard Wilson BAS

A rather snazzy ♀ sawfly Dolerus madidus at this pm. Relatively late for round here, where it is often the first to emerge in late March. YNU

Exciting new British sawfly photographed this week by Pamela Pope in Suffolk (reproduced here). This is Macrophya teutona; feeds on Cypress Spurge + some other Euphorbia spp. Pretty unmistakeable for a sawfly. Probably imported but known from just over the channel so possibly not?

The spring that keeps on giving Fair Isle Bird Obs!

Today saw another amazing fall, with 37 Red-backed Shrike (new day record), 34 Icterine Warbler (more than 3x the previous highest day count!), 7 Bluethroat, 6 Marsh Warbler, a Blyth’s Reed and a rare spring Barred Warbler. Madness!

Delighted to find this bizzare Pseudopomyza atrimana (Pseudopomyzidae) there is only one species in Europe . The ecology is unknown, a data deficient in Britain and rare in Europe. This male was caught in Union Wood, Co Sligo 18.v.2024 and a new addition to the Irish checklist.

Awfully wet weather for us, but great weather for Moss-snipeflies! Ptiolina obscura males were all over a moss-covered, mature oak branch at Cali Heath Yorkshire Wildlife Trust reserve this afternoon. Dipterists Forum YNU

Asemum striatum (I think)...a decent sized cerambycid beetle associated with pine stumps, which are plentiful at where this was seen late pm today. YNU

Impressive looking Sawfly found today here in Bedfordshire. I think it's Pamphilius betulae, not sure if there's any confusion species? If so I'll put it on iRecord. VC30

I say this every year...but I really must spend more time collecting Ephydridae! Scatella paludum, a common 2.5mm shore fly, from trackside mud at Leconfield DST last Sunday. Tim Cowley Steve Routledge YNU Dipterists Forum

The 3mm shore-fly Discomyza incurva, swept above an aggregation of dead snails, within which the larvae develop, at Leconfield DST last weekend. An uncommon species in Yorkshire, so another good find for the site. Tim Cowley Steve Routledge YNU Dipterists Forum

The marvellously prognathous head of Pamphilius sylvaticus, whose larvae develop within leaf-rolls of Hawthorn. Widespread in Yorkshire, but only 3 records in last 25 yrs, so a nice find at Leconfield DST at the weekend. Tim Cowley Steve Routledge YNU
