Last weekend, one of our seasonal Cairngorms Rangers, Becki, captured this incredible photo of a Kentish Glory moth at Muir of Dinnet NNR.

NatureScot are currently carrying out a survey of the invertebrates found on the site to help protect and improve habitat πŸƒ

Colder nights and smaller moth catches Draycote Water but good to record Frosted Green (although more grey than green) and the micro Pammene argyrana (measurung just 5.5mm). Both are local species presumably attracted to the Turkey Oak. British Moths BC Warwickshire

A short 🧡 about Box Moth (Cydalima perspectalis).

This non-native moth arrived in Cardiff in 2018, having spread rapidly across southern England since 1st record in Kent in 2007.

It didn't appear in my garden until 2020. By 2023 it was the commonest species in the moth trap!

They really are. It's remarkable how small patches of native plants can support colonies of insects. They can create a web of life amongst the concrete jungle. It's sad that we all to often cannot tolerate this untidiness. We eradicate so much life.

A Hawthorn bush on a track along foot of Therfield Heath, with I think Brown Tailed Moth caterpillars, Euproctis chrysorrhoea, emerging from their web. BC_HertsMiddx British Moths

Best night of the year, with 57 of 22 to actinics. Striped Hawk-moth was NFY & NFG. Other highlights were Pine Beauty, 2 Dark Sword-grass & Brimstone Moth. 8 Silver Y to the Ni lure after I'd shut down the trap. Migrant Lepidoptera

Milder overnight temperatures, but rain has kept moth catches Draycote Water low. Just 37 last night (9 species) incl the first Swallow Prominent and Oak-tree Pug of the year. Several dozen Common Footman caterpillars have also emerged along the dams. British Moths BC Warwickshire

After last nights bumper catch of 18 species, i'm now upto 58 species for the year, helped by 5 new ones. Best were an early Chinese Character, Agonopterix subpropinquella, Acrolepiopsis assectella & a rather smart presumed Caloptilia semifascia. Fordham, East Cambs
