Let’s put SEND in the simplest of terms.

Some kids are disadvantaged due to needs which impact their self-efficacy, normal development, independence, abilities. These are referred to as SEN & Disabilities. Under the Equality Act, disability is a protective characteristic./

Everyone deserves to be heard, and have a seat at the table. Doing the human work to enable that - everyday, is what we're wired for. Yes, we're all different, but we're also all human.

This beautiful display of connection is my dream for society: one where we help each other, where there is no judgement but a focus on need that we then try to meet, one that understands that we need each other, one that recognises that there is no 'normal,' just humans ♥️

If we went to a healthcare professional and said we were going to sit on the sofa for the next 18 years, we might be encouraged to take some exercise.

But we just accept that this is future for many people with Learning Disabilities, particularly those with PMLD.

Why?

Prof. Amel Alghrani I honestly think the funding issue is a red herring. No amount of money can make a difference if the culture of the school is not welcoming to kids with different ways of being. IMO, the origin of this problem is attitudinal, not financial.

It’s worth remembering that ‘SEN’ is a policy choice, not an innate way of being.

Those so-labelled arise from the inaccessibility of the education offered. If the numbers of kids with SEN is rising, it’s an indication that the the education offered is becoming less inclusive.
